#1 – Our Top Pick
Makita 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless 1/2-Inch Hammer Driver-Drill (model XPH012)
For a fine quality, multipurpose little unit, I’d put this in the best portable drill- “medium use”- category.
At just over 4 lb, the unit is not too heavy in the hand, and can pack (480 Lb torque) a wallop. I was pleasantly surprised by the kick in the hammer drill also. That’s one of the things that make this a great odd job tool suitable for most problems. Versatility is its strength. Maybe you require a bit more oomph if you are a professional carpenter or sparky ( electrician) and we will discuss what’s the best portable drill for heavy usage next, but the speed variability is superb, running first from 0-40, and then up to 1500 rpm in top gear “2”. Battery-? Well you will only get one in the kit, so as par for course you will need a spare- a mild criticism but given the aims on the sales pitch of these…Here’s what they say;
“Its part of Makita’s expanding 18V Lithium-Ion series, the world’s largest cordless tool line-up powered by an 18V Lithium-Ion slide-style battery. Makita 18V Lithium-Ion batteries have the fastest charge times in their categories, so they spend more time working and less time sitting on the charger”
OK they do charge up quickly but I am not always so organised as to have other jobs to do while I wait for a charge up’ so yep get the second battery as a spare. As I say, in a best portable battery review, you have to know what you are asking, so for light to medium use, yep, a charmer for value and strength.
