When you plan a painting project you need to know proper preparation. Preparing is an important step in the painting process and knowing the new coat of paint is only as stable as the surface underneath is where to start. If there is any peeling or flaking paint, it has to be removed before a new coat of paint can be applied.
How to Prepare Surface for Painting
Pressure washing or also known as power washing is the practice of cleaning surfaces needing repainting. This method of washing uses high pressure water spraying. Specially designed pumps are needed to achieve the level of pressure needed for pressure washing. The pumps will apply the water which is many times more powerful than what can come from a typical garden hose. When pressure washing is used on concrete it can remove mold, mildew, bubble gum and other dirt. Pressure washing done on wooden decks can make them appear new again. This method of washing is ideal to remove old paint that is peeling and flaking before new paint is applied to a surface. A surface that is cleaned through pressure washing will allow exterior paint to stick better and last longer.
Pressure washing your surface before you begin is very efficient and will save a drastic amount of time in the removal of the old paint. The power most effective for this type of job is 2,000 PSI to 4,000 PSI. As with all power equipment there are safety measures to take:
- Wear safety glasses
- Wear closed toe shoes
- Review the instructions regarding use of the pressure washer
- Prepare the area around structure you are washing
- Cover all outdoor fixtures
- Close all windows and doors on structure
Before turning the pressure washer on make sure you have the correct nozzle. A 15 degree nozzle works best for removing old paint. You will want to hold the gun and wand tightly in your hands and aim at the surface from an angle. Stand at least 12 to 18 inches away from the surface you are cleaning off so the spray can get under the layer of old paint without damaging the surface.
You will get the best results if you work in sections. Always keep the nozzle moving in a downward and sweeping motion. This motion will make sure the old chips of paint are directed away from your surface. If the structure you are cleaning is wood, make sure the nozzle follows the grain in the wood. Pressure washing works well on aluminum, wood and vinyl siding also masonry, but is not recommended for hardboard siding. Hardboard is more susceptible to moisture and can be easily gouged by the pressure of the water.
Not all of the paint will be removed through pressure washing, but certainly the majority will be. After the surface has dried completely you may need to scrape any loose paint away that did not wash off. Some surfaces can take several days to completely dry before you can begin painting.
